Jean Nouvel’s Pavilion at the Serpentine Gallery is London’s architectural highlight this summer

Darmstadt, July 15, 2010 - For the tenth consecutive year, Julia Peyton-Jones, Director of the Serpentine Gallery in London, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-director of Exhibitions and Programs, will announce the completion of a Summer Pavilion on the front lawn of the small, but well-known Serpentine Gallery at Kensington Gardens. As is the Gallery's custom, an architect with international renown was commissioned to design the pavilion: Jean Nouvel, star architect from France and winner of the 2008 Pritzker Architecture Prize. His design for the pavilion, which will only remain there for the summer, is a vivid red building that is open on all sides. The eye-catching "sculpture" is made of steel, textiles and plastic, such as Makrolon® sheets from Bayer Sheet Europe. The pavilion is on display from July 10th to October 20th.

The architectural design possibilities offered by polycarbonate multi-wall sheets made them an immediate first choice for architect Jean Nouvel, as well as for the construction engineers (Arup, London) and the construction management firm (MaceGroup, London). The three-wall sheet Makrolon® multi extended UV 3X/25-25ES (extra-strong) was specially dyed in "Traffic Red" and produced as 2-meter wide sheets. The sheets are very sturdy yet highly flexible. Thanks to its low weight, the structure can withstand high winds and absorb wind-induced movement even without a massive sub-structure. As with all Makrolon® sheets it is highly impact-resistant and resists strong hail and heavy snow loads. The high light transmission ensures optimum lighting without shadows or extreme light-dark contrasts. A special UV layer filters harmful UV radiation while allowing photo-active radiation pass through. The sheets can be easily sawed, drilled, or milled, allowing hassle-free and quick on-site tailoring.

Serpentine Gallery for Modern and contemporary art

The Serpentine Gallery is a small art gallery founded 40 years ago and located in the middle of Kensington Gardens in the center of London. The gallery is in an historic tea house. Its exhibits of modern and contemporary art attract 750,000 visitors a year. Annually since 2000, the Gallery commissions a summer pavilion by an internationally acclaimed architect who has not worked before in England. Previous architects of the summer pavilion were Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, Rem Koolhaas, Frank Gehry, SANAA, and Olafur Eliasson.

The architect Jean Nouvel

Jean Nouvel (b. 1945) gained international reputation in 1987 with his elegant design for the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. Since then, he has realized his powerful, extroverted creations around the world in places like Abu Dhabi, Copenhagen, and Barcelona. For Berlin in 1996 he designed the Galeries Lafayette at Friedrichstraße. Most recently, Nouvel's model for the National Museum of Qatar was unveiled at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, with an interlocked roof design that looks like desert roses. The pavilion in London is Nouvel's first completed work in the UK.
